This is an infection of the lungs. It causes inflammation in the small air sacs (called alveoli) in the lungs. These alveoli fill with fluid or phlegm, making it difficult to breathe. Due to the fact that a person can struggle to  breathe, one can get out of breath with any physical activity. This causes a lot of patients to stay very still in bed and if that patient was weak before getting sick, this can prolong the recovery period with them finding it very difficult to walk and get out of bed.

Usually, the goals of physiotherapy treatment would include assisting the patient to cough out and get rid of the phlegm, to breathe easier and to maintain the patient’s mobility.
